Barcelona in One Day: Sagrada Família & Park Güell

The two you go inside

Park Güell's monumental zone — the mosaic terrace, the columned hall beneath it and the twin gatehouses — takes about two hours with a guide, and the entry is timed, which is why having it booked matters. Sagrada Família gets the same, covering the nave with its branching columns, the stained glass and both facades from inside.

What this does not include is tower access. The lift up the Nativity or Passion tower is sold separately as the tower ticket at $54.49, and if the view over the city is the thing you want, book that as well or instead.

The rest of the route

Passed rather than entered, which on a first day is the right call — it gives you the map of the city before you start walking it yourself.

The first-day argument

Almost every tour compared on this site leaves Barcelona between 08:00 and 09:45 and gets back between 17:40 and 21:00. Doing that on the morning after a late arrival is possible and frequently regretted, and a delayed bag makes it impossible.

This day collects you at 08:00 from where you are staying, stays inside the city, finishes at 17:00 and hands you a working knowledge of the layout. Montserrat, Girona and the medieval towns all read better on day two.

The two you go inside

Park Güell's monumental zone takes about two hours: the mosaic terrace with its serpentine bench, the columned hall beneath it, and the twin gatehouses at the entrance. Entry is timed, which is why having it inside a booking matters in season.

Sagrada Família gets the same two hours — the nave and its branching columns, the graded stained glass, and both facades seen from inside. Tower access is not part of it; that is the separate tower ticket.

The loop in between

Everything else is passed rather than entered, which on a first day is genuinely useful: you come away with the map of the city in your head and a list of what to walk back to.

You have just arrived, both Gaudí sites are unbooked, and you want the city mapped before you start on the day trips.

• Arrival day or first full day, with a hotel pickup at 08:00
• Neither Park Güell nor Sagrada Família is booked yet
• A minibus of eight rather than a walking tour in the heat
• You want the whole layout — Eixample, Montjuïc, Gothic Quarter, waterfront
• You are happy with a considerable amount of walking and stairs

• Admissions. Park Güell and Sagrada Família are included. Tower access is not — that is the separate tower ticket.
• Effort. The operator flags a considerable amount of walking and stairs; Park Güell is on a hillside with little shade.
• Children. Under-elevens must travel with a paying adult; from eleven the adult rate applies.
